Welcome to UNMUTE. I’m so glad you’re here.
If you’ve ever felt like your voice in the world isn’t quite the one inside you, you’re not alone. I know that feeling well—because for years, I lived it.

My Story: The Silent People Pleaser
I muted myself long before anyone else had the chance.
Growing up, I learned that being outspoken wasn’t admired—it was corrected. So, I became agreeable, quiet, and “easy to get along with.” People praised my calm nature, not realizing it came at the cost of my truth.
Each time I stayed silent, I sent the world a message: my perspective doesn’t matter. I became skilled at reading rooms, pleasing others, and losing myself.
The Cost of Silence
For many of us—especially from underrepresented groups—silence isn’t weakness. It’s survival. We adapt to systems that don’t always welcome our voices. But surviving isn’t the same as thriving.
Over time, I realized I’d muted more than my opinions—I’d muted my identity.
The Awakening
My unmuting didn’t happen overnight. It started with noticing.
I noticed the tension in my throat during meetings. The exhaustion after pretending. The resentment toward those who spoke freely. And I began asking hard questions:
- Who am I when I’m not trying to be acceptable?
- What would I say if I stopped shrinking?
The people I admired most weren’t perfect—they were authentic. That realization changed everything.
Awareness is the First Step
Before you can unmute, you have to notice where you’ve gone quiet. Not in blame—but in understanding. You muted yourself for a reason. Maybe it once kept you safe. But what once protected you might now be limiting you.
This week, just observe:
- When do you hold back?
- Who are you with when you feel most yourself?
- What stories do you tell about what might happen if you speak up?
Notice without judgment. Awareness opens the door to transformation.
What Comes Next
Recognizing that you’ve been muted is only the beginning. Next, we’ll explore how to unmute—gently and with intention.
Your voice matters. Your perspective is valuable. Your experience deserves space.
And it all begins with noticing.
